In this edition,
Noir Records Newsletter speaks with one half of OD404 and
the master behind Defective Audio;
the legend Dom Sweeten! Both OD404 and
Defective Audio have been setting high
standards in the underground dance scene for years now and these are only two
of his many production projects. Dom runs his own hard house label, Spinball
Records, as well as also runs Kaktai
Records with Superfast Oz.
When it comes to producing, you will find Dom making the most cutting
edge dance music in the legendary Studio 404.

Question
1: Thanks for your time
Dom. Tell us a bit about the latest Spinball release (Spinball013), "Fortress"?
This is a track that
these guys sent me and I just liked it, a good solid track with top
production.
I thought it suited the Spinball sound and knew I could do a
good job of putting my personal edge on the remix.
Question
2: What can you tell
the readers about any future Spinball releases?
Not a great deal as I do not know what the next one is yet. I put tracks out
as and when I finish them. All I try to make sure of is that all the releases
are quality tuff tunes that are not necessarily what people expect to hear.
Question
3: You have been
releasing funkier and more housey releases under other names. Do you believe
this will ever become permanent?
It has always been permanent. I am always trying to write as many different
styles as I can but the scene is very unstable at the moment so you have to
think of what will sell more than you used to. I am concentrating a lot of my
funkier side into my newly formed breaks alias “Freeflow45”.
Question
4: The live OD404 sets
are becoming legendary! Could you tell our readers what exactly you and Oz do
behind all that equipment during a live set?
We try to morph and
bend the sound in as many ways as we can without compromising the stability
of the gear. There is only so much you can call “live” in dance music as it
is all coming out of a laptop so we have things set up to enable us to do as
much as we can. The main backbone of the set is laid out in the studio but we
leave ourselves the ability to add elements from any track at any point in
the set. We can filter and effect all or some of the set, vary the tempo,
move sections of the set if needed, extend sections, cut sections, trigger
single samples over the top and generally have fun with it. Each set sounds
different and will sometimes include errors on our part but that makes the
buzz better.
Question 5: Many producers and DJs list you as one
of their influences, who were your main influences?
Hawkwind, Ozric Tentacles, Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, 90’s rave
(Joey Beltram, William Orbit, FSOL etc... ) The Who, Jimi Hendrix... The list
is endless.
Question 6: The scene is now
bursting with upcoming talent, what is your advice to upcoming producers?
Keep making what you love and don’t copy other peoples style.
Question 7: Are there any
producers you think we should keep an ear open for?
There are loads and would be unfair to list some and not others.

Dan Dyson is one of the new generation of NRG cowboys, with an
impressive flow of releases and remixes, each time applying a good dose of
his signature “Dysonage”! If you are looking for the hardest and filthiest
NRG, Dan’s your man!
Dan has a sterling reputation as a DJ when it comes to the
harder side of house and recently Dan established SpinHard
Recordings,
promoting the freshest and hardest NRG.
Noir Records
caught up with Dan this edition to get down to the nitty gritty.
Question 1
For readers new to the NRG scene, can you tell us what style of music you
play?
Filthy Hard Nrg
foremost but can play classic hardhouse and a little techno. Question 2 You have released tracks on many different labels. Are you involved in
any
labels?
Spin Hard Recordings

Toolbox. It is in conjunction with the successful club night Spin which is
the third

Question 3
Are there any releases you are perticularly proud of?
I would say my remix
of Narc's 55 Calibre on Volatile NRG stands out for me
personally because i did a good job of a fierce track.
I do get a lot of comments on Pure Filth,Phased and Confused,Start Rockin
and Whoop especially so i hope this continues for Spin Hard Recordings
Question 4
Do you have any residencies?
I have one at Spin @
Club 414 so people wishing to hear my fierce sound can
check me out here lol.
Question 5

This is the statement sent to
Noir Records from NuWave:
What
a start to 2007! NuWave has gone from strength to strength with the digital
label taking of so fast picking up big names along the way we thought it was
only right to go Vinyl. Our first release will be sometime near April and
will be a 3 track vinyl the tracks are yet to be confirmed. We thought
because the digital label was doing well and we have our first vinyl release
coming out we thought it would be the right time for NuWave to start its own
Hard Dance night. Our first night is on the 24th February @ Artz
Nightclub Dyserth near Prestatyn so make sure your there it is not one to be
missed!
This edition, Noir Newsletter looks at Hard Dance’s Breakbeat cousin!
Hardcore Breaks is a genre of dance music written in the same styles of old skool rave
and breakbeat hardcore. The speed of Hardcore Breaks typically falls between
the range of 145-155 BPM. Most underground scenes need all the support they
can get and Hardcore Breaks is no exception.
There is currently a lot of new and fresh material rising through the
ranks of the underground, which have found their way into boxes belonging to
the likes of Slipmatt, DJ Sy and Ellis Dee. The old skool rave style has been
preserved and refined over the years with up and coming producers using the
latest software and technology to perfect their tracks. There are many
artists in the genre so below are just a couple of active figures from the
scene:
Eddie
Voyager:
Eddie is becoming very well known in the Hardcore Breaks scene. One of his releases
‘Hardcore is the Future’ on Gurnin Beats 001 EP received awesome reviews from
HardcoreBreaks.com and is noted as the standout track on the EP. You can hear
‘Hardcore is the Future’ on Eddie’s webpage.
Stu Chapman: Stu is one of the founders of Enormous Mouse Records. He has a huge
string of releases in the Hardcore Breaks scene and tours all around the
world spreading the music he loves. More info can be found on Stu’s webpage.
There are many digital sources of information on Hardcore Breaks. If you
want to find out more about the genre, you should check out the Hardcore
Breaks Collective page on myspace.com @ http://www.myspace.com/hardcorebreakscollective
We have received many demos from many very talented producers and some of the
results are amazing. Noir Newsletter can only feature a few demos each
edition but keep sending them in as yours may be featured!
Pete North is a sensation waiting
to happen! He has been posting his efforts on forums and we received a demo
he worked on with the techno LEGEND Alex Calver.
The
tune has hints of Pete’s acid techno style and Calver’s pre-Shranz techno.
This is very good techno track and is definetly nothing less than what you
would expect from these two Techno-philes!
